Bayshore a flop?

I was at work the other day and the topic of Bayshore came up with two of my co-workers, both women.

Neither lived close, but had visited Bayshore.  Both didn't like it, one said she'd never go back.  Both preferred Mayfair.

Honestly, that came as a surprise to me, as so many in our area do indeed like Bayshore.   I've been there 20 odd times since it opened last year, and it always appears brimming with activity.  That being said, my concerns were echoed by my friends, that the layout was troublesome.

Generally, they didn't like the "town" aspect, with clusters of stores on "city" streets.  It takes too long to get from one store to the next, and for 4-6 months of the year, they didn't want to be walking around outside.

Can't say I disagree.  While Bayshore has done a lot of things right, and has a clean, interesting architecture that's certainly garnered acclaims .. its functionality is not for everyone.

It boils down to how you want to shop.  Some are browsers, some are purchasers.  If you're a browser, wandering a mile at Bayshore may be a delight.  If you're a purchaser, with something specific in mind, Bayshore and its meandering layout is a pain in the butt.  I admit, I am a purchaser.  I'm guessing there's some gender stereotypes that go along with that idea.

In the end, I believe Bayshore would have had more customers and higher revenue if they'd stuck to the traditional mall format, and not pushed away people who find the theme irritating and stay out.

Would it have been as pretty, "modern", and "town centery"?  No.  Would it have appealed to a greater crowd, willing to drive a few miles to shop, and sucked more people away from Mayfair?  Yup.    I don't think it's a flop, judging by my anecdotal visits, but it clearly isn't optimal for all.

Bayshore has a lot going for it, but I do think the outdoor mall concept was rejected by most mainstream malls for a reason. It doesn't work well in our climate. I like Bayshore, but I won't shop there now because I don't want to go outside all the time in this weather with the snow and ice.

I also wouldn't want to shop there if it was raining.

Bayshore has good restaurants and Trader Joe's, but as a place to mill around and spend a winter afternoon? Not for me.

I am not a shopper.  I do most of my shopping by internet - when I get free shipping.  The rest I do get on SS if I can.  I actually hyperventilate, if places are to crowded, or don't have enough exits -   Another reason I don't shop.

I have been to Bayshore.  I enjoyed sitting at Altera drinking coffee all night, watching the kids run around to the Astronomy group.  I went shopping with a friend once, we left our car at Kohls and walked the whole block - cut across to Victoria Secrets and I was done dragging packages around.  I think the town concept would be good, if it was tied together with the mall and have two entrances - inside and outside.  We went Wednesday night to dinner and had to walk from Kohls parking lot to Bravo's.  Not what I am really interested in doing on a cold night - then again our options in WFB aren't there.  My friends and I went last winter to the mall for some dinner.  It was after a water aerobics class and we didn't want to walk in the cold so we parked in front.  In the middle of dinner we had to get up and plug the meter.  Another time I went to the cheesecake factory.  We were able to park at US Bank - a short walk in the winter - but the restaurant didn't "do anything for me" so I haven't been dying to go back.

All in all, eating at a mall - in a chain restaurant is not my cup of tea.

A few more bike racks at Bayshore would be nice too, then again, they would be nice on Silver Spring.  Something I've been lobbying for for years.

Like you said, Bayshore appeals to some.  The concept is different.  It will be interesting to see what the movie house and bowling area will do to it.  I have seen people "cruising" on a Friday night and "gang" like dressed people wandering around.  People on Santa Monica have mentioned that late nice loud music cruising has increased since the mall opened.

Future years shall prove to be interesting.
